Thanks Dave for your reply, no Sp2 was not installed after installation, it is listed as one of the updates that I need, I'll try keeping Zone Alarm from startiing and try to set the Automatic Updates to Automaticly run and see what happens but I'm afraid to go without a firewall for too long.

Did you also install SP2 when you reinstalled Windows?  If so, that takes care of all the old pre-SP2 updates.  When you go to Windows Update manually is anything listed?  This is a strange problem and barring any problems connecting to the Windows Update server, I'd be inclined to think it might be a firewall problem.  Maybe your firewall is blocking the connection to the Windows Update server?  Turn off ZoneAlarm and reboot and see what happens after a while.  Make sure to stop ZoneAlarm from starting up automatically for this test.

You do not want to be on the internet for 1 minute without a firewall running.  ZA would have alerted you if Windows update was trying to access your PC.   That is unless you specifically have it blocked which I doubt.  Kip

atty,

Yeah, if you didn't install SP2 then I wouldn't do much without a firewall running.  However, if I were trying to find out why something on my system wasn't able to get on the Internet, I would have no problems shutting off my firewall for a short while to troubleshoot the problem.  I don't think in the minute or so it would take to confirm if ZoneAlarm is the problem or not that your computer would explode.

Update will not necessarily engage in a 1 minute time frame.  I do  not see how your going to solve it in less than 1 minute.  If its possible, please let me know.  Kip

You could enable xp's firewall after you shut off ZA just to cover yourself.

kippy50,

You're right!  However, having past problems using ZoneAlarm, the first thing I would do if something wasn't connecting to the Internet or wasn't working right that worked before would be to shut the firewall down and see if it works then.  I don't think in the few minutes that said firewall is turned off that every hacker in the US will figure it out and log onto the original posters machine.  Besides, anyone really worried about the security of their machine should be running an updated virus scanner and Ad-Aware a couple times per week if not more often.  Plus, should the original posters machine get infected in the time it takes to verify whether or not WU is working, then they will hopefully be able to spot it when they turn the firewall back on and some unknown application is asking to send data over the Internet.  At the very least, they should be able to spot a lot of activity on their connection.  I know if my machine is on and I'm not using anything which needs access to the 'net but I see a lot of data going over the connection I find out why.

I had problems a month or so ago when I still used ZoneAlarm with Outlook not being able to log into the server.  Outlook was allowed Internet access in ZoneAlarm, but nothing!  Turned off ZoneAlarm, worked fine.  My next step was to not install ZoneAlarm when I reinstalled Windows a few days later.

Thanks everyone that gave advise, I do have the internet firewall on, can it be because I have both the internet firewall and Zone Alarm going?    I had some critical updates to download and install and now I have everything except the Service Pack 2, I went to the site and did the downloads manually.  I once again set it to Automatic Updates and I'll see if it works, could it be that I needed the rest of the updates before it would work??  Time will tell, I goofed up my system installing Norton Internet Security 2004 and ended up having to do a format, partition and a reinstall, it was then that I put Zone Alarm on and at first the Update did work.  I don't want to go to the Windows Update site and download the SP2 because I hear there is problems when you download it there.  Thanks again.

atty,

Just one firewall is enough.  I had problems with some applications being allowed access to the 'net in ZoneAlarm but still not connecting until I shut down ZoneAlarm so I got rid of it.  I'm currently using McAfee without a single problem.  However, everyone tends to have their own experiences with the same programs.  I also used Norton's for years but finally got rid of it when I began having major problems with it causing the OS itself to not work.  A reformat and reinstall of Windows was the only way to clear that mess up.

I have the same problem except that I did the upgrade from ME to XP and the XP update script doesn't work. Upon investigation I found that the WindowsUpdates folder that should be in the folder Windows was also missing. I suspect that the cript that creates the folders and the regsitry entries failed. I have loaded SP2 manually so I suspect that I will be safe for now, but not forever. I need an answer to this problem

Inspiron 8100 windows ME upgrade tp XP Home (using Dell disk) .

XP will not update

MS office will update as per scripting
