This message (according to KB article Q286405) is quite simple to fix. Try this:
1.In Internet Explorer, on the
Tools menu, click
Internet Options.2.Click
Delete Files, and then click
OK.3.Click
OK to close the
Internet Options dialog box, and then try again to access Windows Update from the
Tools menu.
Odd, very odd. As I thought I had no problem accessing the link. Out of curiousity, was this link forwarded to you? Or did you access this via Dell support.
I am logged into Dell support (so my username and password are cached on this PC). So I had no problem accessing this link (assuming it is a link to a secure area that only allows authenticated users).
The Dell link was not forwarded to me. I originally access the Dell link by navigating through Dells' web site. I am at work at the moment (the problem is on my home PC) and clicking on the Dell and Microsoft link works fine here.
Do you think that me not seeing the ActiveX bar/warning anymore is related to this problem?
I don't know. I don't see that activeX option, and it links perfectly for me. Sounds like IE is way off. You can try a restore to a good date, but whenever I am forced to this option...I generally look at a reburn :/
Thanks for the advice but I'm still stuck. I think I've exhausted the Microsoft site still but can't find a fix. System Restore can't take me back far enough to when Internet Explorer worked.
I think I will wait for the next upgrade to Internet Explorer to see if that cures it or maybe I'll download Mozilla Firefox as an alternative.
Are you using Windows XP with Service Pack 2? If so, there is a prob with direct linking and right-click downloading...it's addresed on the MS website...I too was afflicted with this same ailment; Sorry I don't recall the direct link, but you should not have any probs finding the patch as the problem was indeed prolific.
I'll have another look although I thought I had exhausted Microsoft's Knowledge Base.
To answer your question I was on Service Pack 2 but last weekend I removed it (brave me). The computer went a bit wobbly at first e.g:
- ran very slow,
-clicking on an application did nothing,
- display stuck on VGA which I could not change with the Display utility in Control Panel but I then fixed it easily with the Dell resource CD (phew),
- could not log off correctly - had to force power down,
- could not dial out (dial up modem),
But, after a few reboots it now runs like a train - very happy so far.
I then uninstalled Internet Explorer using the instructions on the Microsoft site which is quite easy. Just have to locate a specific key in the registry and change a value in it from '1' to a '0'.
I did this for Outlook Express too just to be thorough.
I then downloaded and reinstalled Internet Explorer and OE, rebooted and guess what? The problem is still there.
I think I'll not install Service Pack 2.
I suppose I could reinstall XP if I can't find a fix on the Microsoft site but I am not sure if this will get rid of programs I have already downloaded or lose some of my personal files. Does anyone know if I this will happen?
I'm trying to recall what the fix was (but having dificulty...old age, I guess...). If I can find it, I'll certainly post a link.
BTW- I've been using FireFox since it was in pre-release, and love it to pieces...wouldn't dream of using another browser. Give it a shot, I promise you'll never look back...you may want to download some of the add-ons to get it tailored to your needs, but they're all accessable on the Mozilla site.
I downloaded the Mozilla firefox broswer and still could not download so therefore the problem was elsewhere.
I eventually tracked the problem down. The problem was caused by Zone Labs Zone Alarm. I had the Mobile Code Control switched to On (available on the Pro version). This prevents downloading.
So, after a long haul I got there, and thanks to those who offered help during the long journey.
