Cannot Install Intel Extreme Graphics Driver

When I try to install the driver for 915G Intel Extreme Graphics,  I get a "setup error."  If I use the device manager to try to update the driver, I get a "access denied" error. I have tried the updates from the Dell Driver download section.  I have tried the updates from the manufacturer's (intel's) site.  I am completely at a loss.

Right now, my video controller is showing VGA with a yellow question mark in the hardware device manager.  Prior to that, the intel 915G driver was listed two times.  One of those listings had a yellow question mark beside it.  It would not update no matter how many times I tried.  Finally I chose uninstall drivers and tried to start from scratch.  Now, I cannot install/update to the intel 915G driver at all.  Please help?

Could it be that a process is open which prevents me from updating the driver?  Can I install the driver before Windows starts?  Do I need to manually delete driver files from the previous installation?  I am at a loss.  Please help?

Also, if it matters any, I tried to update to SP3 through windows update site and got the same "set up" error and access denied error as when trying to update/install the intel video driver.

My System:

Dell Dimension 4700

256MB Memory

Intel Pentium 4 with HT

Windows XP Home

Integrated Graphics:  Intel Extreme Graphics - 915G series

Try this work around for your problem.

Start your PC in safe mode.

Once in safe mode, hold the Windows key down and tap R key, in the run box type the following and hit OK

net start msiserver

Navigate to the Graphics driver installer package, see if it will install now. Reboot the PC.

It did not work. However I got a work around from a Microsoft tech guy. 1) Downloaded a .zip archive of two files. Unzipped both files to desktop. 2) Restarted in safe mode 3) Double clicked one of the files from the archive. A command window popped up and text just starts scrolling down the command window screen. I have no idea what the freak it was doing. The file was called reset.cmd so I guess it was resetting something? 4)When the action in the command window ended, I installed the driver package and it worked. Thank you!
