Cannot Turn on Automatic Updates nor Run Windows Update

Running XP SP2....

Ran Windows Update - got message I needed to turn on autoupdate/BITS manually thru control panel....

BITS service is already running - autoupdates service was disabled...

Changed startup type to automatic and tried to start the service  - startup type changed back to disabled and the service did not start - same thing happened when I tried the startup type of manual...

Still also cannot run Windows update manually...

Tried using Windows Security Center to set automatic updates to yes - tells me it can't do it and to use control panel...

Suggestions?

thank you in advance

Re: Cannot Turn on Automatic Updates nor Run Windows Update

Are you logged in on account with Administrator privileges?

Is some security software preventing you from changing the autoupdate service setting?

You could try running the windows file checker, just to be sure there isn't a file system problem:

click start>run

type in: sfc /scannow

(space between sfc and /)

click OK

Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

Re: Cannot Turn on Automatic Updates nor Run Windows Update

Yes -I only have one user on the PC who is administrator...

The security software was turned off - I suspected that also..

I'll try the commands you suggested...

thank you

Re: Cannot Turn on Automatic Updates nor Run Windows Update

Sounds like you just re-installed Windows. Did you go here and download and install the drivers in this order?

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

Validate your version of Windows here.

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Attempt to run Windows Update

Re: Cannot Turn on Automatic Updates nor Run Windows Update

Try creating a new user account with full administrator privileges and see if that one can get the updates. Existing account might be corrupted.

If all else fails go to MS update site and look for the link to get FREE update support for problems like this. They've helped me fix update issues, were very thorough and always followed up to make sure that the problem was resolved.
