Cannot Uninstall NORTON

My subscription expired to Norton and was gonna download avast antivirus

I went into add remove programs and clicked Norton Remove all and it kept sying uninstallation has

failed do you want to retry which I did about 4 times Then I just downloaded avast anyway and it

immediately detected norton and windows security center says both antivirus is off and my

computer was extremely slow so I removed Avast thru System Restore and Now Norton says

Uninstall and then Reinstall becuz some of it's components are missing.  I cannot update Norton and cannot uninstall it so I now have no Antivirus protection at all.

I went into msconfig and stopped Norton from running  but it is still on  Please Help Me

I haveDimension 2400 windows XP

It would help to know exactly which version of NAV you're referring to (i.e., 2004, 2005, etc.), but for starters, have you been to Symantec's support site and run the automated Support Assistance tool?  Have you checked their knowledge base for specific uninstallation instructions?

"I cannot update Norton"
Why not?  You could always renew the subscription.  If it was working properly prior to the subscription running out, why would you want to fix/replace what wasn't broken?  MP3 players and image viewers are one thing, but if you have an AV application that's doing the job properly, why mess with success?

HI,

Use the Symantec / Norton NAV removal utility RNAV

The page has manual instructions and links for various other programs and versions

I'd be carefull with the Norton removal tool.  I used that and it messed up XP and I had to do a XP Repair.  I was trying to remove Norton Internet Security 2005.  I had removed it using the add/remove programs, as Norton says to do but I still had fragements left over and C.A. EZ Armor security suite would not install because it still detected Norton elements (I restarted Windows after removing Norton and before attempting to install EZ Armor).  I went to the Norton site and as directed downloaded the removal tool, which wiped out my System Restore and some other Windows componets and thus the reason to do a Repair.

I had to finally manually remove any left over folders/files and then manually remove all Norton/Symantic entries in the Registry.

Sometimes you can uninstall a program that can't be uninstalled by add/remove by going to my computer, click your drive, click programs, find NortonAV and open the folder. Look in the folder for an uninstall file and open it and see what happens. Sometimes it launches a uninstall. A more shoot from the hip method is to click start, click search, and type in Norton. Then delete all the Norton files and folders. Then do a new search and type Symantec and delete all the Symantec files and folders. That should clean 98% of any referance to that piece of garbage. I was able to uninstall NAV2005 from the add/remove folder, but I deleted at least a half dozen left in files using the search method.
