Cannot Update

Question

I cannot update windows I go to the page and it wont load it says ie script error. It does the same thing when i tried to create a new user profile. can you help me?

Here are the suggestions from that site:

" Problem Description:
When you are using the Windows Update Web site you receive a script error.

Resolutions:

First, check your Internet Explorer settings to make sure that they are configured correctly for the environment.
1. In Internet Explorer click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
2. Click "Security."
3. Click "Custom Level."
4. Make sure that "File Download" is enabled.
5. Make sure that "Run Active X controls and plug-ins" is enabled.
6. Make sure that "Active Scripting" is enabled.
7. Set your Java Permissions to "Medium safety."
8. Make sure that "Launching applications and files in an IFRAME" is enabled.

Suggestion 2
============
Make sure you have disabled any ad removal programs, Web accelerators, and anti-virus programs prior to accessing Windows Update. These can cause script errors.

If the steps above do not resolve this issue you can try the following:
1. Open Internet Explorer, click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
2. Click "Connections."
3. Click "LAN Settings."

4. Then type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\msjava.dll" (without the quotes). Press Enter.
5. Then type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\jscript.dll" (without the quotes). Press Enter.
6. Then type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\msxml.dll" (without the quotes). Press Enter.
7. Then type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\actxprxy.dll" (without the quotes). Press Enter.
8. Then type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\shdocvw.dll" (without the quotes). Press Enter.

those all do not work... It isnt just doing it on ie(it does it everypage) it does it when i try to create a new user profile too please help me!

It sounds like you have an IE problem, rather than an update problem. If this just started, try a system restore to last date available when you know it worked.

Click start>help & support
Click "undo changes..."
Follow prompts and pick last date available when it was ok. Any Microsoft updates originally installed after the date used for the restore will have to be reinstalled, but personal files won't be affected.

If that doesn't do it, open Add/Remove Programs control panel. Click Add/Remove Windows Components at the left. Uncheck Internet Explorer, exit and reboot. Now go back to that same screen and recheck IE. You'll probably need your XP CD so have it handy. Reboot when it's done. See if that fixes the script error.

It problems continue, try windows system file check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click OK
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

yeah i cant do a restore or any of that because i previously had a virus and i dont have an xp cd.

There's the possibility of it still being infested with viri .....
