Cannot delete file

Question

The file is called US{1} and it has 0 bytes, it shows up when I defragment files as undefragmentable, when I try to delete it I get a stop error"Cannot delete file. Cannot read from source file or disk" I tried deleting it in safe mode, same error.
It wouldn't matter as much, but disk defrag has 3 fragments left over from the undeleteable file. I defragged several times, Used check disk, windows repair(for another problem), SFC, tried moving the file, but cannot get rid of it. Please help. Thank you.

I thought maybe it was from AOL or Dell(AOL US[1] is I think SApayment Aol.com, and US[1] is also Dell's American flag on the top left corner of this page. I frequently delete temp files in "local settings" but the file I was having trouble with may not just deleted correctly.Thanks for your response. If I have any furthur problem I will try the method you posted. Merry Christmas

Msil, Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum. Was it a video file or avi file? You can try the following. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Problem: When copying AVI files, it takes anywhere from 3-5 minutes. Copying any AVI files can be extremely slow. Discussion: This is a bug within Windows XP. The bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll. This bug can also cause XP not to let you delete some AVI files. It may tell you that the file is currently in use. Solution: 1.Create a system restore point in case of any problems, then proceed. 2.Click on Start, Run. 3.Type in 'Regedit' and click OK. 4.Browse to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489- 5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32 5.Delete the last registry entry ( InProcServer32 ). 6.Close the registry editor and restart the system. *Thanks to TVman2 for finding the information. Just an extra note, if you do a 'search' for this key it will not be found, look for it manually it is very easy to find. I got stuck here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489- 5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

because I don't have that folder. Could the file I need to delete be in any other folder?
