Cannot find CD drive

I have had tons of trouble with playing a CD on Windows Media player, and with burning a CD on Windows. I put a blank CD in the drive, and it always says there is no CD in the drive. Yet other programs can find it. But I would like to be able to use the WMP. What is wrong, how do I fix it? This has been a problem for about a year, now. It's very frustrating.

Sandpines,

A problem such as you describe can be caused by replacing a CD-R drive that used Roxio CD burning software with a DVD-R/CD-R/RW that uses Nero.  Roxio DirectCD drivers and Nero InCD drivers are not compatible. If this is the case, uninstall the older CD burning software.  Another cause can be the Sonic DLA driver.  It can cause the CD to be inconsistent in recognizing different types of CDs.  If Sonic RecordNow is installed, disable the DLA (Direct Logical Addressing) that allows you to drag and drop files onto a recordable CD.  Shut down and restart after making changes such as these.

Quick and dirty solution:

Put the CD you wish to play in CD Drive.

Open My Computer. Right click on CD drive. Left click on Properties. Right click on Hardware tab. Click on CD drive. Click on Properties. Click on Volumes tab. Click on Populate.  If the CD is a program, music, or data CD you should see data refresh on the page. If it does not, you may need to uninstall the drive, and let Windows re-install it on restart. If Information changes, close everything. Now try to play your CD with WMP.

I have the drivers that came already installed in the computer from Dell.

The CD driver is LITE-ON LTR-24102M CD player and burner

The DVD is LITEON VDV-ROM LTD163 and it is a player only. I don't have a DVD burner.

And I have never replaced either one.

I use WMP and Real PLayer and Acoustica. It's WMP and Acoustica that have the problem finding s CD in the drive. Real Player seems to not have any trouble. But I don't like the Real PLayer program very much.

I've never had Nero, and I had Roxio that came with the computer. But I uninstalled it after about 6 months. (I didn't care for the program.) I, also, had Matchbox Jukebox for about 2 years, which I loved, then it started freezing my computer. And because I could get ant answers from Matchbox J. support, I ended up uninstalling that too. That was when I went with Acoustica. But, like it said, it often, says there is no disc in the driver when there is. And I have always had this problem with WMP.

I have LITE-ON LTR-24102M CD drive.

And the CD burning programs that I have are WMP, Real Player and Acoustica.

I had Roxio, at one time that had come with the computer from Dell. But I don;t have it anymore. I uninstalled it. I, Also, used to have Musicmatch Jukebox, but it stopped working, and it kept freezing my computer. I ended up deleting that too.

I have this problem of an alert saying there is no CD in the driver when I use WMP and sometimes, Acoustica. Real Player never seems to have any trouble. But I don't care for the program very much, and would rather use one of the other two.

Sandpines,

Had similar problem on an HP today with HP CD-Writer Plus DVD.  Two things. First, cleaned laser lens with Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner (Available at Office Depot).  Second, McAfee Spamkiller appeared to cause problems with lengthy *.wmv burns when using Sonic Record Now DLA method.  Windows Media Player 10 worked fine, with or without Spamkiller enabled. Erased, ripped and burned 1 track, 3 tracks and 22 tracks on same CD-R/W disc with WMP 10.
