Step 1:

Open up Windows Explorer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on File Types tab. Choose the file type you want to edit (for example: jpeg) from the list. Click the Change button.

Step 2:

Choose a program (from the list) that you want to use as the default program for the chosen file type. Make sure there is a check mark next to "always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Then click OK. Then click OK again and you're done.

If the program you want to use is not listed, click the Browse button. Navigate to the Program Files folder, then the folder containing your program. Then choose the executable (with extension .exe) that runs your program. Click OK and you're back at step 2 above.
