Chinese Operating system
Hello, I need some help. I would like to purchase a new laptop for an University student She is in China and will be using the computer in China for now. I am looking at a XPS16 Laptop Dell and I think it will come with Window 7. She speaks and write English as a second language. But at this point in time she will be running her operating system in Chinese.
What kind of things should I be considering? It does not seem like that we can order the computer in China. So if I ordered the computer in the USA, how do I get it to"speak" in Chinese? I am not all the that computer savy. I have heard mentioned of language packs. Is this what is going to take care of our issues. Or does do they just allow her to input and display Chinese characters? Sorry I am not even sure if I am even asking the correct questions? Some help please. Some guidance please. Thanks in advance.

Hi, If you buy the system outside China, then you will need Vista Ultimate or Win 7 Ultimate for the Language Packs. Also if you buy the system in the US, then dell will not ship to China, better off buying it in China.

Robin, Thanks for the reply. I agreee with you about buying the Dell in China. But I have a couple of obstacles. Well as far as I understand I do. A few years ago Dell had an Chinese site that could be accessed in English. I can not find one anymore. Two weeks ago I chatted with Dell, USA and they said that they could not help me. They also mentioned that they could not ship outside the USA to China. That would have been the preferred method for several reasons. One being that I have a preferred account. That person also could not aswer my questions about getting a Window OS in Chinese.
I don't mean to be a pest but is the only difference between Win 7 Chinese version and the Win 7 English version is the language pack? If that is the case couldn't I just buy the Dell computer in the USA and order it with the Language pack and then just bring the computer to China with me or ship it to China privately? Again I agree with you that buying the computer in China would be the prefer method for logistics and for warranty and service issues but I don't think that option is available to me. My friends wants a Dell so I don't think that they would be happy with another brand. I will google Language packs for some more info. Thanks again.

Ok, I went to those sites. I guess I am not the only one looking for answers about Window Operating systems in other languages. You all's advice was very helpful. It got me pointed in the correct direction. Although not completely understanding things I now have a better understanding. Two days ago I thought Chinese Windows OS's were a completely different animal than an English Window OS's. Also know that I have to be aware of which versions of window OS that I buy ( I mean a Home verses a Professional version). Thanks again for your help.
