Clean Install with WinXP Upgrade disk

I just bought the WinXP Home *Upgrade* (perhaps mistakenly ) from Dell. I want to do a "Clean Install" for several reasons. However, that will format my disk, thereby removing the WinMe that came on my 8100. Because of that, XP will ask me to put a "qualifying" disk (WinMe) in the CD drive during Setup. However, it *appears* as if the WinMe reinstallation disk Dell sent me with the system does not "qualify" as it has neither \i386 or winnt.exe on it. Can you verify if the disk does or does not "qualify" and, if not, what do I do?

I have read nearly *everything* on a WinXP installation and have submitted this question to Dell email Support (but got a vacuous answer telling me to read a KB article that I know by heart). So, I know how to do this IF the original WinMe reinstallation disk is sensed, by WinXP Upgrade Setup, as "qualifying".

If I can't do a Clean Install, because the WinMe reinstall disk is skeletal and not sensed as "qualifying" by WinXP Setup, then I am willing to buy the *full* WinXP install system. But, I want to be sure I have to first.

Thanx in Advance,

Reid

I apologise; I think I posted this to the wrong forum and have reposted on the WinXp forum. However, I will thankfully take an answer anywhere I can get it.

In addition, I have read one post on the Win XP forum that says the Dell WinMe disk will work, but I would like reconfirmation.

TIA again,

Reid

I used the Dell ME CD to install XP upgrade on a 4100.
