Clean install of Windows XP

I have an Inspiron 6000. I would like to do a clean install of Windows XP, but I don't have the original OS CD. Where can I obtain a Resource disc that contains the drivers to get me back up and running? I did try to install Windows Vista, but some of the hardware is not supported.

 Thank you.

See Windows Reinstallation Guide:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

This will instruct you on how to install Windows XP.

XP is obsolete and has ~ 1 year left until Microsoft stop updating it entirely. Therefore it is recommended to upgrade to Windows 7 32 bit.

As you are in the US you can request the reinstallation CD from Dell using the request form (the link is in the guide) however you may be charged. You can also likely find a Dell XP Reinstallation CD on eBay. All you need is the XP Reinstallation CD and the drivers are available here and should be installed in the order listed:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/w/laptop/3745.inspiron-6000-windows-xp.aspx

Regarding Vista I assume you tried to install the 64 bit version which won't be compatible or have less than 1 GB of RAM (which is easily upgraded).

Edit: from looking at your Service Tag you only have 512 MB of RAM (if you haven't upgraded it).

RAM is user upgradable and I advise you to replace your current 2×256 MB modules with 2×1 GB modules using the part here:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Inspiron%206000&Cat=RAM

The Service Manual: http://ftp.dell.com/Pages/Manuals/inspiron-6000.html will instruct you in how to replace the systems memory.

512 MB of RAM is poor and Windows XP will run much better with the 2 GB upgrade. The 2 GB upgrade will also allow installation of Windows 7 32 bit.

This system should run Windows 7 32 bit fine once the part is upgraded (and hence also Vista 32 bit).

I have listed a complete driver set for Windows 7 32 bit here alongside a 32 bit .iso:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/4521.inspiron-6000-windows-7-32-bit.aspx

Opposed to bothering hunting down an XP Reinstallation CD I advise you to try and install Windows 7 32 bit without a product key alongside the drivers mentioned. Assess the performance of your system before deciding to purchase a license.

You have the ATI Video variant.

The Windows Reinstallation Guide will instruct you in installing Windows 7.
