Clean reinstall of Windows XP Professional

Hi I recently bought an Inspiron 6000 loaded with XP home editon and no hd partitions.
I am planning to partition my hard drive and want to do a clean installation of XP Professional.
I don't have the drivers but i belive they are there on my hard disk and i can write it on to the CD.

It would be great if someone can give me pointers as to what precautions i should take while doing this task.

Also after formatting how do i reinstall the dell software which is used to diagnose the system?

Thanks
Paphillon

Download the drivers and put them on a USB thumb drive.  You should have received a Resource CD with those drivers on it.

one more doubt, Will there be any issue on the hardware warranty? if i change the orignal OS as it was shipped with? I just read it somewhere on the post that the service warranty gets void.. is that true?

To add to a recent post, simply click on it, pick Message Options, then Edit.

Adding hardware or software to your Dell does NOT impact your warranty. Dell allows you to add hardware and software. The new items are not warranteed by Dell, but the rest of your system's warranty is unaffected. Click here to see Dell's official position.  Dell won't support the new OS, but the warranty is fine.  They CAN require you to reinstall Home to obtain support.

The drivers have to be downloaded, you cannot copy them from your hard drive.

No display drivers are needed in a notebook, just one for the video card.

Thanks for the site comments.  :smileywink:

Thanks everyone,

I did the clean installation of windows xp professional without any problems. :)

Well just to add to that, I don't have the Dell Media Experience (DME) software since no sw cd was shipped with the laptop (Don't know why Dell has this policy of not shipping any sw CD). Where can i get the DME from? is it available for download?

I dropped all the partitions and recreated them, so i guess i lost the Dell Diagnostic partition in the process. Is it really important to have that on the HD? I had read it somewhere that it can be burn on to a CD itself, but how do i do it?

Thanks & Regards,

Paphillon

Ok so where do i download it from? and what abt the DME?

Thanks

It's not that big of a deal.  You can download the program and run it locally.

The DME software can be obtained by Dell, see the FAQs on the DME forum.
