Make sure your system is not already updated. To find out press Windows key and Pause key or right click on my computer if it is on your desktop. Read your XP version and see if it also includes SP2. You may also find it listed in your Add/Remove Programs if it has been installed.
The "cache" used should either be in the Temp folder, Temp Internet files folder, or downloaded programs folder. There may even be a windows update folder. You may have to go into your folder options to modify viewing hidden folders and files. By using Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) it should show eventually in one of these locations when it can be safely deleted.
