Computer suddenly goes into some sort of hibernation

I have an Inspiron 1750, Windows 7.  Recently, computer suddenly goes into some sort of hibernation mode several times a day -- the screen goes black, I hit the power button several times, and eventually I get a logon screen . . . I'm the only user, and I get a screen with an icon in the middle.  I click on it and I go back to where I was.  It happened in the middle of a chat, and the person on the other end thought I had disconnected.  Any ideas?
