Computer will not boot after using Norton Ghost to Recover My Computer

Question

I have a Dell E510 desktop, running Windows XP with Dell Data Safe, which includes Norton Ghost.   After downloading a Dell update,  (R169697 Dell Support Center update) the computer acted strangely, so I used Norton Ghost to 'Recover My Computer' to a period prior to the update. After Ghost applied a prior image to my computer, it rebooted and a blue screen appeared. At this point, I am unable to boot up. The blue screen includes error messages such as 0x0000002x, 0x00190203, 0x86767CAO, etc.   I was able to start up Norton Ghost 10.0 at startup. Using any of the prior images, the computer still will not boot (I get the blue screen).  If I run Recover and verify, I would receive the following message:   Recover 60BB0119: The operation, Copying volume data over existing volume, completed successfully, however, there was an error while updating the NT registry updates. Error EA9D0017: Unable to open registry hive file. Error 00000570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Error EA 3905E4: Bad directory buffer signature.   Using a Windows startup disk, I reformated the 'C' partition and again tried to recopy the Ghost image.  The same errors above occurred.   Any suggestions?

Okay, pardon my attempt at humor....

Are they good images? Sounds like they may have somehow become corrupt.

It sounds like a this point your only option is to reinstall the OS from scratch and reinstall the other software you had....

Yes, I thought they were good images.    My fear is that one of the patches that I downloaded is causing the problem.  Is there no way at this point to back the patches out?

I am not familiar with Ghost, so maybe someone else can jump in...

I know you are suspecting (hoping???) it is a patch and the damage can be undone, but that seems unlikely to me, as I thought Ghost images wrote over whatever was on your HD - including the suspected patch.

I have to say I agree with hrova here what you had is now gone and the images you made are toast as well it appears.   I would recommend a clean reinstallation as much as it is painful for you it looks to be your only option.   I would recommend that you upgrade from Nortons Ghost to a more reliable back up solution as in Acronis True Image here:   http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/index.html   pcgeek11

Thank you for your help. It turns out my Ghost images were corrupted. I was finally able to restore using a very old Ghost image.
