Only one firewall and one antivirus program should be active on a system at any time. Since you are using McAfee, you should disable Windows' Internet Connection Firewall. Windows XP does not have a native antivirus capability.
My problem is that the windows ballon alert keeps poping up after I log in and tells me that Windows update is turned off. I turn it on and then the same alert pops up again when I log in.
Also how do you turn the firewall and virus protection off. Is this done through the security center?

I am pretty much aware of what you stated.
