Control Panel Missing

We have lost our control panel on our main and only logon
When we right click on the desk top and select properties we receive this message
"The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator"
Like I said above we are the only logon, so I would guess we would be the system administrator
Can someone please advise what we can do to undo this so that it will enable us access to our own control panel
Please help it's driving me crazy :smileytongue:
Thanks

JeneenJoe,

You can try to do a system restore to the date just before this problem first appeared.  If proper functionality is restored, run a complete virus and spyware scan on your system.  Include a scan for rootkits as well.

If the System Restore doesn't fix the problem, create a new user account with full administrative priveleges, and -assuming this one works correctly- take ownership of all the files and folders belonging to the old account and then delete the old user.

If new account doesn't work correctly either, try windows system file check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

Odd, this is 2nd or 3rd post with a similar problem in the last week or so. Wonder what's going on here...

Yes, I have had to fix a few machines lately with this problem

It is malware which adds registry values such as " NoControlPanel".
Many XP functions can be disabled in a similar fashion.

You will have to go to the HijackThis forum here

Read the red link at the top and then post your log on the forum with a description of your problem, plus the Model of Dell you have and the OS Version.

Don`t try to fix this youself as you could do a lot of damage.

There's a solution for this that has worked for several people, including myself.  To see this solution, just do a search on "missing control panel" and look for the post authored by Ni Ni.   It should be the second post listed.  Good luck.
