Copying folders does not always work ???!!!

Trying to copy folders from a CD to the hard drive.

Nothing happens when I copy all the CD...

If I go folder by folder, it seems small folders accept to be copied while larger ones dont...

I.e. I drag a folder, drop it into its destination and ..... wheewwww... nothing happens !!!

Running Vista Ultimate on an Inspiron with 2 G memory, 100 G hard drive

Seems to me there could be some small buffer somewhere that does not accept large items to be copied (say larger than 100 Megs)

I feel perfectly stupid !

In what directory are you pasting the folders???? try to do not paste them on the because they are restricted.
Now, if you are trying to paste them on a networked folder, probably that's why you are having that problem. I had the same problem, and not sure why, but I moved some big files from the networked folder to another location, and then I was able to copy/cut big files in there...

I some times have the same problem when copying large amounts of files onto my flash drive.
To prevent this just make folders and copy the files into there not putting to much in the folders at once.

Thks for the reply.

No, I did not paste them in any restricted directory such as Windows.... (would never dare do that !!:smileyhappy:)

And it is not even a networked folder....

However, it is a Public folder (as I have different configurations on my laptop and I need to access the same files from different pllaces, I put my own files in the Public folder)

So my problem is still open :-(

Come to think of it, my XP machine is VERY (and strangely) slow in moving things around the Public folder (I also have large folders there : a total of ??? 10 000 pictures in 15 folders)

Google for a program named Beyond Compare.  It is basically a sync program but would server the same purpose for your needs.

That's what I did.

The workaround is very simple but can prove extremely tedious. I often have to deal with large folders containing 20-40 subfolders with other sub-folders in it and the whole thing measuring ??? 300 to 500 Megs. So, in this type of situation, one is prone to make mistakes...

Back to the beginning : This issue is totally ridiculous and unbelievable. In 2007, after spending billions on Windows development, Microsoft is unable to come up with a simple and efficient way of copying files ?????

There MUST be a solution!

It's a solution.  Anyway, I copy the entire contents of XP discs to folders on a irregular basis but have never seen the problem you describe.

I cant imagine myself installing third party software just to be able to copy files and folders ....

I do the same and music MP3, Movies etc and have never seen this as a problem either on six different PCs. Not saying that you don't have an issue, just I have never seen this.

This isn't related to the Kapersky file copy bug is it? Limited to 16,384 file copies.

Nopes. I dont move around that many files at work. My guess is that what happens with me happens with ?? 2000 ?? files. But, some may be large (presentations are very often around 5 Megs, etc) But it seems to me that the system doe snothing quickly, if I may say. I mean it does not seem to analyze anything. Perhaps it simply reads info on the folder that is already available. It certainly does not spend a couple of minutes busy before deciding that copying is not a worthy task for an advanced operating system !

This is beginnning to sound like an AV program actively scanning all those files.

That sounds interesting.

Will try it later.
