Chkdsk is not defrag. It checks your disk for file errors. You can run Chkdsk within Windows without any parameter. Go to Run, type Chkdsk and read the screen as it runs. It will tell you if there are problems. To run Chkdsk  /f make sure you immediately reboot after answering Yes & pressing Enter to the question "Do you want to run at next reboot?" If you get no error message, you're OK. To Defrag, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

once you schedule chkdsk to run, it will not run until after the computer is rebooted.. there are a few ways to run chkdsk.. one is to go to start/my computer, rightclick on "local disk:c", then click properties/tools/error-checking.. another way is to go to start/run, and type "cmd".. then, in the dos window, type chkdsk /r, then "y" to confirm, then reboot.. you can also run just "chkdsk" from the command prompt, or "chkdsk /f" (from the command prompt).. as mary said, defrag is under start/all programs/accessories/system tools/defrag.. you can pin it to your start list

I Understand the difference between Defrag and Chkdsk…My problem is that when running Defrag I get an error message saying:

"Disk Defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume C: Please run Chkdsk /f "

I have ran this with chkdsk, chkdsk /r, chkdsk /f, chkdsk /p….AND rebooted when it asked the question do you want to run the next time the computer is rebooted….

P.S.S.

When I run chkdsk I get:

"WARNING F parameter not specified.

Running chkdsk in read-only mode"

It will run 1 of 3 and then 2 of 3 and it deleted 2 index entries THEN

"errors found.  chkdsk cannot continue in read-only mode"

and then it shows DOS prompt
