Deleting index.dat files

Question

Hi, I have a problem and a possible solution might be this: 1. Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. 2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files. 3. In the Delete Files dialog box that appears, click OK. 4. Under History, click Clear History. 5. In the dialog box that appears, click OK. 6. Quit Internet Explorer. 7. Log on to the computer by using the account of a user who does not experience the problem, and then open a command prompt. 8. Change the directory to the following path: drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 where username is the name of the user account that has the problem. 9. Type del index.dat, and then press ENTER. 10. Close the command prompt, and then restart the computer. The Index.dat file is recreated the next time that you log on to the computer. My question is - how exactly do I 'Change the directory to the following path' and the steps following this and is it harmful to delete the index.dat file? Well, Please DON'T delete those *.dat files (you probably can guess - It's not a text files...). Secondly, leave this painful 'solution procedures', go to THIS LINK ,download the App ( emptemp2Setup.exe ) and Install it on your machine, so with only ONE mouse Click you can get rid of all the unnecessary junk files but safely.:smileyvery-happy:   Alon C.

It is perfectly safe to delete all index.dat files on your PC, except for the one located here:
C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\OFFLIN~1\index.dat

There is a reputable free program called Index.dat Suite which allows you to find, view the contents of, and delete all these files safely. You can get it at:

bibek, You can also delete them by going into a different user account than the one you want to delete the files from (must also be admin account) go to my computer>local disk c>docs and settings>click the user account you want to delete file from ,navigate to the index .dat file you want to get rid of and delete it.As joe53 states do not delete the index file he has in red.If you need to do this on a regular basis joe53's link is the way to go.
