Dell Dimension L400c Problem upgrading to Windows XP
When i try to install Xp over Windows 98 I get a message saying my C drive is corrupted. This was after I reformatted my C drive and reinstalled the original Windows 98 SE software.
I am told to:
1)check disk space (12GB)
2)Consider changing video adapter (not sure how to do this, and the compatability test did not identify any hardware issues.)
3)check fo any BIOS updates (again, not sure how to do this)
4) Disable BIOS memory options such as Caching or shadowing
5) cONSIDER USING SAFE MODE
The technical information said:
Stop: 0x0000008E

Users who attempt to upgrade to XP over an existing Windows 9X system almost invariably encounter problems. Do a clean install of XP, which you can do with an Upgrade CD using the procedures here and in the included links.

After you delete the partition there will be a pool of unpartitioned space shown on the hard drive. Create one or more partitions from that space after which you will be able to format the new C:\ prior to continuing with the installation. My best guess is that the report of a corrupted drive was generated by the upgrade installation, particularly if the system was operating properly before you began the upgrade.

When you reach the partioning screen select the large partition and delete it using the "D" key. This will result in a large amount of unpartitioned space. Since you only want one partition select that unpartitioned space (see this) and press .

I have one computer with 6GB and one with 10GB. Both have windows XP on them but I am not sure if it will run optimally or not. I am considereing getting a refurbishe 120GB hard drive. Also once I have upgraded to Windows Xp do you always recommend doing the windows updates. I have heard that there can be problems, particularly with SP2. I am also concerned about the additional space that SP@ would take up
