Dell E521 and USB problems

I have spent over 10 hours with tech support trying to rectify USB problem. two USB devices work, a webcam and thumb drive. Connected up a new HP printer with Vista drivers works fine. When booting PC stalls at dell screen, reboot with power button everything boots fine. With printer disconnected PC boots fine, printer connected will not boot. HP says the problem is with USB driver, Dell tech support confirms problem. Why can't they fix it ?????

Out of curiosity, which bios version are you running and did Dell support discuss the Bios with you at all?

I had this same problem with my Western Digital external hard drive.  The technical support site for WD said it happens when you connect the drive to the computer before booting.  One solution is to disconnect it, start the computer, then connect it while the computer is fully booted into Windows and wait for Vista to detect the drive.

Also, in the BIOS, you must disable the Boot From USB Device option.  The list of things you can boot from should only include the hard drive and a CD or DVD drive.

Tech support had me change bios to remove USB support from boot sequence, still no effect for boot up. I'm still surprised as to how other USB devices, web cam, thumb drive all work but not a printer. I'm not that much of a techi, but if everything else works why not a printer ?

From what I've read at other forums this has been an ongoing problem but still no updated BIOS has been written.

To solve the problem I think i just might leave the computer on and let it hibernate/sleep so I dont have to keep rebooting.

Bill, Will my computer be okay then? I updated to 1.1.5 with no problem.
