Dell Factory Image Restore failed.

Hi, I wanted to reset my laptop to how I got it so I backed up my files and found on my recovery partition a tool which resets it to factory settings, but I didnt realise you had to reboot and go into it, I thought you could use it while logged in it started to format my drive or whatever it does, but it failed halfway through. I know I am an idiot, but now I can't get in to Windows, it comes up with BSOD saying unmountable boot volume and every time I try to go into the recovery menu it doesnt let me select the operating system so none of the recovery tools work. Can anyone help me?

p.s. i dont have any of the OS CDs

Hey,

Try this... Turn on your computer and just as it turns on keep presing F8 repeatedly until advanced boot menu comes up... There should be an option called "Repair this computer".... Use that and see if it works...  This is what I used to restore my dell Inspiron 1526 laptop... Your procedure might be different if you have a different computer though... You can probably find the procedure in the manual which u can find online :)  good luck.

ajoh00n,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. During the boot process, a blue bar with "www.dell.com" appears at the top of the screen.
  3. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press .

If you do not press in time, let the computer finish starting and then restart the computer again.

  4. On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
  5. On the next screen, click Confirm. The restore process takes approximately 6 to 10 minutes to complete.
  6. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.

  7. When prompted, click Yes. The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer was turned on.
  8. Click Next. The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
  9. After the computer restarts, click OK.

If you still cannot get into the restore you will need to re-format and reinstall Windows. You say you do not have the disc? You can click the title below and request backup disc if you are still within your warranty period.
