Dell Factory Image and Other Image Software

Hello everyone!  My questions concern my new Dell XPS 1330.  I have had problems with this laptop practically right out of the box.  Within 7 days of ownership I had to manually reformat and reinstall Vista because it crashed and would not reboot.  Dell Support talked me through the procedure of applying the factory image but after many hours of verify and repair files, the image restoration would "not" work.  Dell Support and I finally gave up and did the manual reinstallation of Vista that I spoke of earlier.  Needless to say, I have no confidence in this laptop and I am very afraid of losing my data again.  Luckily, I had the important data backed up!

What does Dell use to create the factory image?

I've tried using Acronis to create my own image of the entire computer but it will not recognize "any" internal or external drives.  What can I do?

What's the chance of Dell giving me a full refund for this laptop?

KylesXPS,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum,

You can contact Dell Support about maybe getting a system exchange or a refund. Are you having any issues right now with the system?

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:

How long have you had the laptop?  You have a 21 day grace period, in which you can return it for a full refund.

If it's outside the 21 days, you'll only be entitled to a replacement... and it's *possible* it'll be a refurbished laptop.

It's very seldom Dell issue brand new replacements, but that probably depends on how long you've had the laptop?

If it's less than (i.e.) a month old, you *may* be one of the lucky few... but don't bank on it?

I had to manually reformat and reinstall Vista because it crashed and would not reboot.

Was that AFTER tech support talked you through trying a factory restore?  Were you actually able to do a restore, but still had problems after doing so?

I ask, because if you reformatted the hard drive, and did a 'clean' install BEFORE you contacted tech support, you'll have deleted all the partitions- including the 'Recovery' partition, which will be why it wouldn't work!?

Tech support would've picked up on that straight away though - surely?

What does Dell use to create the factory image?

Dell uses Norton (/Symentec) Ghost.

What version of Acronis True Image did you use to create the image?

Hello and thank you for such prompt replies.  At the moment, I am not having any issues.  The HDD has always made a clicking / skating sound but i just assume it's supposed to.  I still have no confidence in this system because of my initial experience.

I got this laptop aroung the first or second week of December 2008 so, i guess that nulls the chance of a refund or new replacement.

The manual reinstallation of Vista was after I spent many hours with Tech support tyring to get the factory restore to work. I was never able to do the factory restore but that is what we tried first.

It appears that after my manual reinstall of Vista that the factory restore option is not available. I wanted to try a factory restore just to see if it would work after I did the manual reinstall of Vista but it could not find the image or something like that. That's why I had the question about what Dell uses to create the image so that I could see if it were possible to recreate it myself but now I don't think I want to mess with it anymore. I may give up.

I'm not sure of the Acronis version I have. It is a couple of years old for sure. I will have to wait about 2 weeks until I get back to the USA to verify the version.

My laptop is important since I work internationally, that's the main reason for these post.

Thanks again for the replies, Kyle.
