Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop

Hi all.....I'm not sure if this is posted anywhere but took a quick glance and couldn't find anything, but if it is please link me to the correct area/post :)

I have the Inspiron 6000 laptop and it needs to be re-formatted but I have lost the back up CD and all files to do this.  Does anyone know where I can get these? I have been searching everywhere on Dell and nothing at all.

Thanks in advance!

The Inspiron 6000 came with Windows XP (most like the Home Edition).

Windows XP is reaching End of Life in April and it is inadvisable to use such an obsolete version of Windows as it will be totally insecure when Microsoft stop updating it. For more information see: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/endofsupport.aspx

This system can be upgraded to Windows 7 32 Bit providing it has 1 GB of RAM or superior installed but the cost of a new Windows license probably isn't worth it for this systems hardware. I have not tried Windows 8 32 Bit on this machine but from this YouTube video it looks like its running without issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe1xB2cxS-Y Windows 8 32 Bit will be a bit cheaper. In the UK you can get boxed media from Amazon or Tesco for about £50:

It is about a third of the price of Windows 8 sold via the Microsoft Store: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/Windows-8-Pro/productID.272001400

If you really must install Windows XP then you may be able to find a Dell Windows XP Home Reinstallation CD on eBay but this will cost you about £10-20:

However as mentioned it is highly unrecommended to continue using Windows XP.

If you want to try installing Windows on this system before buying it try the Windows 8.1 consumer preview:

For more information see Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 8:

There is also a section on installing Windows XP.

Frankly for a laptop of that vintage, I would not put any money into it. Download and install Ubuntu Linux 12.04
