Dell Latitude E5520 - Upgrade Seven 32 bits SP1 to Seven 64 bits SP1

Hi everybody,

I bought a Dell Latitude E5520 in 2011 with a french windows seven 32 bits operating systems. I have 8 Go RAM so I would like to upgrade my OS version from a 32 bits to a seven 64 bits SP1. My laptop (processor, ram) is full compatible with the 64 bits version. I have the original 32 bits dell DVD and licence key which was included in my purchase. I have no seven french 64 bits DVD operating system and I would like to buy one to upgrade my laptop..

Is it necessary for me to buy a new licence key (for the 64 bits version) or will my 32 bits licence key be fonctionnal on this 64 bits DVD version ?

Thanxs for all.

Dell will not sell you a Windows 7 64 Bit disc usually, they only support the original OS so if you requested media you would likely get 32 Bit media.

However your license is valid for both.

You can use the ABR program to backup your Dell OEM Factory SLP activation:

Likely the same files I backed up work for the French version but you may want to backup your own just in case.

You can then use a Digital River French Windows 7 .iso of the same version of your COA:

Install without a product key and after installation, use ABR to restore the Dell OEM Factory SLP activation. See A Clean Install of Windows for more details:

As Philip says, the product key is valid for 32-bit as well as 64-bit installations.

Additionally, kindly note that upgrade across architecture (32-bit to 64-bit or vice versa) is not supported. You need to perform clean install only.

Installation done with success. The product key is valid for both version (32 bits or 64 bits)
