Dell OS recovery system crashes...

Dell Inspiron 2200 problem...

I've tried to make my backup OS (Win XP)cd using the Dell OS Recovery System. The first attempt "encountered an error" at 87% of the way through the process and hung up. Subsequent attempts with new blank cds have failed also, with the progress bar racing up to the 87% mark and the cd/dvd drive making clicking sounds. At this point the machine is really locked up... I can't get out of the app. using taskmanager or soft-boot at all... I can't even open the cd/dvd drawer manually by pushing the release button. My guess is the OS recovery system is reading the first file it attempted to make, and is crashing because that file is damaged in some way. Is there any way way around this problem? If I found and deleted the damaged file, would that help?

I really wish Dell just supplied a Win XP install disk. I paid for a Win XP OS, I should have one!

(1) The Dimension/Inspiron XPS systems will ship with all the CDs

(2) All other systems will ship with at least the Office or WorkPerfect CDs

(3) The OS (operating system) CD can be made by you using the On-Drive OS Media on systems shipping from 12/17/05 thru 7/15/05. Go here for instructions using the On-Drive OS Media. After 7/15/05, you may request the operating system from Dell through the rules of the Media Reduction Initiative

(4) Any other CDs (Dell Media Experience, Power DVD, Resource CD, Applications/Backups/Tools CD), can be made available to you upon request through Chat or Email through the rules of the Media Reduction Initiative

It's a run-once program and most users with problems using it have not pursued the issue. Just call Dell for the CDs. The post above is a copy from the FAQ at the top of this forum.
