Dell Resource CD questions...

Hi there, apologies if I've posted this in the wrong forum... I've done a clean install of Windows XP Home Edition Sp1a on a Dell Dimension 4600 and am a little unsure of the install order for the Resource CD drivers. The CD provides a link to a site which gives the order as follows:

1. Desktop.

2. Controller.

3. Video.

4. Communication.

5.  Input.

6. Audio.

7. Miscellaneous.

8. Patches, Utilities and Applications.

I'm just concerned that this really is the right order, given that there is conflicted information out there about the correct way to install Dell drivers. Also, I'm a bit confused as to what heading some of the drivers come under. A couple of drivers listed under Diagnostics are network diagnostics, presumably you install these as network drivers? Also, the only input-related drivers are two keyboard ones listed under the Utilites and the Application sections - do I install these as input drivers? There's also a controller diagnostic that I'm not sure I need, when you try to install it it says to insert a floppy disk.

I'm also having problems extracting some of the files properly. Surely it wouldn't be a problem to download these elsewhere and install them via a USB stick?

Thanks a lot for listening, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I advise install Windows XP Service Pack 3 before any drivers:

Note that Microsoft Windows XP is reaching End of Life in April 2014. For more information see http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx

Thanks a lot for your advice. The problem I'm having now is with Windows Update, I've installed SP3 and run loads of Microsoft Fix-Its and tried all kinds of tricks. I'm just hoping I installed the drivers correctly, there doesn't seem to be a problem with my set up, the Windows Update problem seems to be registry related but actually nothing I do helps. Could it be a Dell driver installion problem?

Hi Chucklington,

Drivers should not cause an issue in running windows update. Please let me know if you ran this MS Fixit for Windows update issue.

Also check if you are getting a similar error message shown in the link below. If so, follow the instructions given in the same link.

Let me know if this helps.

No change... I've actually tried that Fix It and a couple others already, plus various tips and tricks such a deleting the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder. I have no idea what to do now!

Oh yeah, before I forget... the main issue that Fix It keeps reporting is 'Service registration is missing or corrupt'.

I've actually run that Fit It before, if you click for 'not listed' it doesn't do anything... I think it just uninstalls the listed programs?

Hi Chucklington,

Please try to run Windows update in clean boot. Find the link below for instruction for clean boot:

You may also try disabling the antivirus software and then running the updates. Also let me know if you are getting any error message while running updates.

Follow Windows Reinstallation Guide page 302. Make a Windows XP with Service Pack 3 Installation CD and clean install.

This is something I hadn't tried before, didn't work sadly... I actually haven't got antivirus installed, have even tried Microsoft Update site with firewall off!

I definitely think Windows registry is corrupted, even though I did a clean install. There seem to be other issues, for instance one of the Fix Its I ran found a problem with icons and the shelliconcache key is missing from the registry (as are others, I imagine).

Just a few questions:

1. Not sure about the install order shown here... do i really install the network and wireless drivers before the audio?

2. Do I really have to install Net Framework 4.0 before the Dell Drivers?

3. Should I use the model rather than the service tag to search for Dell Drivers as is suggested? I've done a clean install a few times now and the service tag search only offers a few drivers, there are a lot more with the model search. Also, are some of the drivers marked 'urgent' actually optional, such as the Sonic Solutions ones?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, thanks for the help!

Hi Chucklington,

Please install the drivers in the order give below:

Chipset
Audio
Network
Wireless
Video

You may install the Net Framework 4.0 after all the driver installation.

You can use the service tag to get the drivers for your computer. Click on the link below, enter the system service tag and click Submit. Select the Operating system from the drop down list to get drivers for your system model:
