Dell USB chipset and Windows 7 and Apple
For months I synched 4 iPhones with iTunes on Vista on a Dell Vostro 1500. Then I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate in October and have had problems since.
There are Technet posts that indicate this is a Dell USB chipset problem. I have posted on Technet:
Now the iPhone is never found by Windows (no iPhone icon in the Computer window) and the iPhone never shows up as a USB camera device in device manager.
The usbaapl.sys driver always installs and shows up in device manager as Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.
Sometimes the iPhone does show up as a device inside of iTunes. Sometimes then the 3GS iPhone can be synched in iTunes.
Sometimes the iPhone doesn’t show up as a device in iTunes and sometimes when it does, the synch fails.
Always, when I eject the iPhone from iTunes, Windows 7 tries to compete the installation of the iPhone as a camera USB device and the installation fails. The message is ‘device driver software was not directly installed. MTP USB Device. Device Unplugged.’
Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, not much of a help for your specific problem, but there have been reports of numerous problems with iPods/iPhones and Windows 7 over the past several months.
Some things to try: reinstall the chipset drivers; downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes; try synching off a USB hub.

I'm having the same problem with an Inspiron 545, Win 7 32 bit and an itouch. I had the same problem with Vista before I upgraded too. But the itouch works perfectly on the machine running XP!
As soon as I plug it into the 545 it claims it needs to be restored, so I restore it and then it says - it needs to be restored! It's infuriating!

I'm having the same issue on two dell laptops.
Dell Inspiron E1705 & Dell Latitude E6500
Windows 7 32-bit on both
iPhone 3GS
I can't get the camera to show up in My Computer and every time I unplug the device it tries to install MTP USB Device with the error message "Device Unplugged."

Try researching your problems on the Apple web site, they, Apple, have more knowledge of the problem than Dell has. It is an Apple problem.

Actually I think you may be wrong. From the Apple site it appears that the issue could well be a Dell one. Either a USB issue or a BIOS issue.

the iPhone in question is a 32GB iPhone 3GS. I tried a friend's 16GB and it loaded normally.
