Dell XPS 400 Setup Won't Detect Hard Drive

Running Windows XP Media Center Setup on a DELL XPS 400. Setup fails to detect drives each time.

-Properly used Dell Support Drivers for the XPS400

-Made sure drives were detected in BIOS

-Tried Drivers based on Motherboard Chipset (though I can't find the exact chipset for 82801GDH, so I had to find "similar" ones.)

-Tried with Raid turned on and off between two hard disks.

-Tried each disk independently

Any suggestions?

Turns out that the setting "Raid Autodetect/AHCI" was causing the issue with the system. Once I changed it to "Combination: AHCI/ATA" it worked just fine.

Sounds like XP SP2 CD you are using doesn’t have required HDD SATA drivers

If correct, you need to obtain a copy of driver from either the Resource (Drivers & Utilities) CD supplied with XPS 400 or download it from here

Options are:

1. Copy the driver to a floppy disk & use it at the Windows Install Setup F6 key prompt

Your XPS 400 needs a system board connected Floppy drive if you want to use this option?

2. Create a slipstreamed (XP SP2 + SATA driver) installation CD

Option 2 is most common used option, for typical “how-to” click here

It should see them without anything installed in the bios.  If not then the NVram needs cleared.

If the bios can not see the hard drives, then the software most likely won't see them.

PLEASE enter set-up and bios - change the raid setting on sata operation to COMBINED!

My hard drive died in my Dell xps 400 desktop. I purchased a Seagate 500 GB Barracuda SATA HD (also avail on the Dell website), but installation (physical install was so easy you can do it with your eyes closed) was a bit tricky in that in order to reinstall the OS (Windows XP MC), drivers for this drive had to be read via a floppy disk. I have the drive, but all the drivers were on the cd that came with the HD.  Long story short - I messed with the set-up and bios and eventually did the very same DLAWSONAW. I switched my SATA/PATA TO COMBO and wha la.  Good y'all! :emotion-5:
