Desktop icons do not open with double-click

XP PRO (PRE SP2)......Logitech MX500 optical mouse:
I have programmed my mouse to have one of the custom buttons
function as a double click. I have been using this to open my desktop
icons for several months now. Suddenly, the button no longer has any
effect on the icons. I have retested and reinstalled all mouse software to
no avail. All other functions work fine. In order to open a destop icon
now, I have to use the "Open" menu or multi buttons on the mouse.
It seems that the desktop icons only become functional after doing a
Desktop properties refresh, or invoking other programs first. I have
Norton System Works/Firewall utilities installed and there are no virus,
spyware/intrusion alerts or errors ATT.
Any ideas or solutions?

This happens to my Intellimouse once in a while. Deselect the double click and go back and reselect it. Test it and see if it works. If not, reinstall the mouse software. You might check for Logitech updates to the software while you're at it.

Thanks, but I've already done all that. Still no resolve.
