Have you tried running a system restore point to a recent date when all was well? May not help if you have deleted a required file, but always worth a try.
europa303 , Thanks for the reply. One of the first things tried was to use Restore and I used different restore dates, with no help. It appears you are right and that I have actually deleted the file. Right now I have disabled the display adapter driver so I can use the Internet. The display is now using the windows default monitor and I assume the computer is using the mother board display hardware. When I deleted the monitor from the Device Manager and the computer switched to the default monitor, the display adapter driver went into an Infinite loop and shut Windows down.
You've checked the recycle bin for the deleted file or files?
Actually, I'm not clear what the problem is. Are you saying you need the driver for a specific graphic card that was deleted, or the driver for a specific monitor? Which graphics device do you have? And which monitor do you have? If you go to device manager and expand the display adapters section and monitor section what is listed in each one? Knowing these answers may help with a solution.
You may wish to review the drivers listed in the video section for the Gen 2 in the following link. Reinstalling the correct driver file may solve the problem:
Mfr: Dell Model: Demension XPS Gen 2 Type: Desktop CPU: Peneium (R) 4CPU 3.40Ghz Installed RAM: 1 GB OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Disk Drives: C Drive 232GB, 3.5", CD-RW Optional Info: Video card 256MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 XT, Sound Card Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM),Printer EPSON Stylus C84
Dell 1801FP Digital Flat Panel Display Monitor
The only problem I need to solve is to somehow find and load the Plug and Play Monitor file back into the Device Manager. From there I can make adjustments and load the Monitor driver from a disk, if needed. If you are running Windows XP, on your device manager there will probably a listing for a Monitor, probably right after Modems. There is no listing for Monitor in my Device Manager because I mistakenly removed it. I have checked the Recycle Bin and the file isn’t there. Drivers are not the problem. The drivers for all devices including the Display Adapters are working properly. Thanks for your help.
Like europa303, a little bit confused, so could be wrong: :emotion-43:
But sounds like deleting PnP Monitor has either deleted original monitor.inf file located in C:\Windows\inf folder or more likely broke the monitor device path link to original monitor.inf file that contained your Dell 1801FP configuration/spec & PnP is now pointing at one of the other monitor inf type files
If originalmonitor.inf file is still present it will have been renamed monitorX.inf
(Where X can be 2, 3, 4…8, 9 etc..)
Only if you can identify correct monitorX.inf file, then you could rename it back to monitor.inf
Probably just quicker to use Dell 1801FP Digital Flat Panel Display Monitor disc to reinstall monitor.inf file that will then point to installed Display adapter(s), in your case ATI Radeon 9800 XT
Once done you can (if you wish) open new monitor.inf file, note content & then delete the monitorX.inf file that has the exact same content (it’s just duplicated/original file)
Edit: When fixed, if you right click PnP Monitor & select Properties
On General tab, Location should indicate “on ATI Radeon 9800 XT”
On Driver tab, clicking Driver Details button you should receive the message “No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device”
Thank You, Reinstalled the ATI Radeon 9800 XT driver and PnP Monitors showed up on the Device Manager. Looking at Display on the Control Panel it still shows Default Monitor which is a VGA type. Can’t find how to change the Monitor type to show my AGP Flat Screen Digital Type. The monitor.inf file is still intact.
Reading your first post again quote, “While troubleshooting a graphics card issue…”
Not sure what the original issue was or if anything else was done?
But assuming it’s not an unresolved adapter hardware issue, then if not already done try this:
Open Properties of present Control Panel default VGA Display icon & from this location, navigate to Adapter tab Properties to use the Update Driver button
Select/specify correct path to ATI Radeon 9800 XT driver(s)

In Device Manager, if you right click Monitors, then click Scan For Hardware Changes, what happens?
