Disastrous results upgrading to XP SP2

Greetings,

I have an Inspiron 5100 and a few days ago, I installed SP2.

For my surprise, when I restarted the system, it was locked due to a general failure. I simply could not get a clean boot nor access my hard drive. I called Dell customer support and after a huge sweat, I solved the problem restoring to a previous restore point. The Dell technician even suggested me to reformat my hard drive!

What do you guys think? Should I try to reinstall SP2 or just wait until Microsoft does a better job?

I also read that there was a serious incompatibility problem with Intel pentium4  2.4ghz, is it true?

Thanks

Guy

Hello Guy,

my inspiron 9100 (XP Pro) also crashed a few hours ago. In my case, I could identify 3 plausible causes:

1/ installation of SP2,

2/ installation of EXEtender.exe (GamesMania through Bell Sympatico)

3/ firewall conflict - McAfee, Freedom (from msn premium) and Windows Firewall from SP2 were running concurrently. Yaiiiks!

My system crashed upon restart. Same as you, I restored it to a previous point & disabled Freedom in msconfig (startup). Everything seems to be running smoothly now, but I suspect it would be prudent to abstain from initiating any more download of SP2. Until the web detectives crack the case, that is. In the same vein, I  disabled windows automatic updates, to avoid any unpleasant surprises when I come back from my skydiving long week-end.

I wonder if anyone else has encountered similar problems. Any input would be greatly appreciated ...
