Disk Cleanup does not run

Question

I am running Windows XP Home--- Until recently the DISK CLEANUP program worked just fine. It now starts and hangs up in the calculate phase. Tasks manager shows it running, even two hours later. All other system tools and programs work fine. I have tried to restore to a previous point, where I know it ran, to no avail. I have tried SAFE MODE, to no avail. I have tried using CLEANMGR from a cd off another xp where it runs, to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you delete HKEY  'Compress old files'  from registry it wont check 'Compressed old files' or hang. Use Windows+R  & type   regedit    click OK or press Enter key , then navigate to HKEY. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files right click on HKEY &  Export 1st in case to later want to add back , then select Delete HKEY.
