Disk Cleanup will not open
I have a dell 8200. with windows XP and running AOL 9.0. Computer is running slow. I normally run disk cleanup a couple of times a week. Today when I went to run it, it will not open. When I click on it, the hour glass comes up then goes away and nothing else happens.

The executable (cleanmgr.exe) may be corrupted. Try replacing any corrupted/missing system files with System File Checker. Go to Start|Run, type sfc /scannow and click OK. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP reinstallation CD.

When I went to run and typed that in it asked me to put in my Windows XP Professional CD. What I have is the Home edition, is that the same thing. Here is what the prompt said.
Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.
Insert your Windows XP Professional CD Rom.
I just wanted to make sure I was putting the right one in before I messed up something else.

That's an odd message but the system files in Windows XP Home are the same as in XP Professional so your CD will work.

Hi,
I know this is not exactly good news for you but I had a friend who experienced the same problem with the disk cleanup and I spent hours searching for the answers. I went into other forums, etc, etc and even though I never was able to find a fix, I did learn many others are having the same issue. It appears that Microsoft is aware of it but to this day I have yet to see or hear of a patch put out by Microsoft that will correct this problem...

The fix for the hang at three dots in the progress bar is available here. If Disk Cleanup opens with those three dots already displayed it is possible that after you apply this fix and let it run to completion it will behave normally afterwards. If it does not, post that fact. There is another method of running Disk Cleanup from the command line which may work if the method you are using does not.
