Display Delay with Windows Explorer Thumbnails - Help!

I just purcheased a DellE510 running XP Pro.  I loaded all my data from a backup hard drive to the hard drive on the computer including lots of photos.

The Problem...........
When I click on a folder that contains photos (set to display thumbnails) two unexpected things happen.  There is a delay in displaying the thumbnails and when they display they are about half the normal size.  If I click on another folder and then come back to the one I am trying to view it loads up much quicker and the thumbnails are the right size.

If I go to detail view instead I and click on the folder I see each filename icon (at the very left of the filename) populate one by one going from top to bottom.  It is as if it is generating the little icons one by one.

Everything thing with the computer seems to be fine except for this.  I have a Dell D610 laptop and the thumbnails load like lightning.....really fast.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Kurt

Kurt,

Open any folder and click Tools>Folder Options on the toolbar.
Click View tab
Scroll down and make sure "Do not cache thumbnails" is not checked.

Thank you for the response.  It was already set and I cycled it off and back on such that "Do not cache thumbnails" is not checked.

Seems to be the same results.

What is really odd is that everything else seems fine.  I loaded Picassa from Google and it is really fast...no perceived delays whatsoever.

I am not sure what to do at this point.

If I open a folder on my HD (Dimension 8400) with lots of photos, they first appear with the icon for graphics program associated with .jpg on my system and then one by one the actual thumbnails appear. If I close the folder and do it again, thumbnails appear immediately ("Don't cache" is not checked), so maybe what you're seeing is 'normal'.

There is a limit in XP on how many total icons and thumbnails can be cached, so perhaps you're just exceeding the limit. I have X-Setup Pro utilities which has options to set how many icons and thunbnails should be cached, but I've never played with it. Got it as bonus for buying something else, and I don't know how much it actually may cost.

You can download Tweak UI, free from Microsoft, which has an option to set the size and image quality of icons, if that's any help. Look for the link to download TUI on this page:

Ron,

I really appreciate the response.  Your explanation of what is happening is actually better than my own!  I have begun to watch carefully to see if this a graphics display problem in general.  The problem seems to occur even if there are few thumbnails in a folder, but they are in subfolders.  I need to play a bit with it and see if I can narrow it down.

My real concern is that this is a brand spanking new Dell E510 and I have never had a computer with this type of display delay.  It concerns me that something else at a higher level is wrong.  I want to be sure before I get to far along and just accept it.  I am hoping that there are others out there who have seen the same thing and can explain it.

Thanks,

Kurt

You're welcome. I'll be interested to see if somebody else has resolved this issue too.

This same problem is occuring with me... I just got a Inspiron E1505 just a couple week ago and when I open up a picture folder it takes anywhere from 5 seconds to almost a minute to load, the thumbnails are small and grainy initially and scrolling through the folder causes lagging and jumping around.
This never happened on my, now, five year old laptop, why does this happen on a brand new laptop?

I don't think xp not being capable of caching that many thumbnails is an issue my old dinosaur could do it.  If these new computers can't, that would be a sad state.

Also, the "do not cache" option was already not selected, so nothing strange there.  Thanks

I found this on another site that worked for me...  It seems to be another picture software program taking control, or trying to and screwing things up.

"After days of talking to customer services and several unsuccessful inhouse service calls, Dell replaced my computer. I wasn't happy about the whole experience or that I lost days of productivity due to all of the problems, headaches, troubleshooting, and having to get two brand new computers all ready for business with all of the software downloading and configurations. But, all seems well with the world now

I figured out the thumbnail problem before the computer was replaced, (by the way, no problem whatsoever with the new one, never had to do a thing to change any settings out of the box and it works fine...imagine that!), anyway the following details what one must do if they have the viewing problem that I had and the loading problems:

First of all, make sure that when you are opening a folder that contains other folders your settings are as follows:
View ---> Customize. Then choose the option "documents for any file type". Second, open any image, right click on the image, choose the middle tab selection (mine says photoshop image), then CLEAR the box ,(uncheck it),that says generate thumbnails.

These seemingly simple things within the viewing settings made all the difference and there are so many view settings that can be changed. The unclicking generate thumbnails box was the obscure little thing that I couldn't find but when I did it made everything fall into place and preform the way it should. Everything will load up lightning fast without any issues, no wierd sizes, no broken or missing thumbnails."
