I attempted to update Internet Explorer 6 to internet expolorer 8 and after two hours it still was on downding updates steps. What could be causing it to not download?
I looked in Add or Remove programs and none of the widnows updates are listed. Also, the computer seems to be unstable, slow and unresponsive at times. Thank you for any advice.

It could be good to reinstall Windows XP after a secure wipe with DBAN (Step 7a) in case there is a virus or infection left behind from the old installation.
Install the following immediately after installation of Windows XP. Note do not connect to the Internet as the standalone installer may try to search for updates if connected and stall. Once all these are installed then install the system drivers and retry Windows Update.
I donwloaded the programs recommended and burnt them to DVD-R. I copied them to the system drive. XP SP 2 would not install cause a newer version is installed.
If I used DBAN to nuke the drive, will I be able to use an OEM OS reinstall disk? Why is there nothing listed in the add or remove programs list (appwiz.cpl)?

Yes, delete any partitions seen (after backing up your data), then install to the Unallocated Space by choosing Quick Format.

I reinstalled windows xp pro and drivers.
I am attempting to update ie 6 with ie 8. I hope to have this thread available if any issues arise.

I donwloaded the programs recommended and burnt them to DVD-R. I copied them to the system drive. XP SP 2 would not install cause a newer version is installed.
If I used DBAN to nuke the drive, will I be able to use an OEM OS reinstall disk? Why is there nothing listed in the add or remove programs list (appwiz.cpl)?
