SMBus Controller is its XP

Vista Win 7 and Win 8 doesnt need chipset drivers

I have now looked all the way through the items listed in Device Manager (including sub-headings) and cannot find anything named 'SMBus' or 'SMBus Controller'.

Any ideas please?

Can you post a screenshot of your device manager with Other devices expanded?

Also mention you system model. Try to get the Device ID and Vendor ID using the description given in Page 1 for each ? mark

My computer is a Dell GX270 Mini tower

I cannot fully understand what you mean by: Try to get the Device ID and Vendor ID using the description given in Page 1 for each ? mark - please try and explain further if possible.

At the moment I am running Win XP Pro SP3 with no problems. The yellow question marks are against the on-board graphics that I do not use. I have installed a video card and that is working fine.

I am planning to upgrade to Vista or 7 because Microsoft support for XP is ending very soon. That is why I am asking about drivers.

The drivers I currently have installed are:

R58201 (Chipset)
R58182 (Sound)
R66787 (Network)

There is one more driver I could have installed for the on-board graphics but I have not bothered as I do not use it.

Have Inspiron 17r n7110.  Am trying to upgrade OS with fresh install of 7 ultimate.  During early stage of install I get a message that install cannot proceed until I install dvd driver.  I get on another computer, go to dell driver support, put in the Service tag of the offending machine, download file, unzip and sabe to flash.  I install flash, os install reads flash and says there are no system drivers there.  I use cdrw with same result.  As I examine my downloaded and unzipped driver files, I realize all are listed as applications, perhaps because they are embedded in wizards.  Question:  Where on my hard drive will I find the driver itself outside of the install wizard?  Win7 OS does not seem to recognize Applications as driver files.

1st thing, Win 7 is a DVD, it wont work on a CDRW. Insp 17R should have come with a DVD drive. 

Before reinstalling windows, try BIOS load defaults. Tap F2 on Dell Logo --> At the bottom you should see something like press F9 to load defaults. Confirm by saying Yes. Then Press F10 to Save and Exit. Press right arrow key to highlight exit and choose, Exit saving changes or Save & Exit. 

Now keep tapping F12 and choose DVD/CD Rom. 

Use the following steps to install the OS

After you reach the desktop you need to install the drivers one by one from Support.dell. Once you reach the desktop let us know. If you have an error during install post your error message in a new Thread in OS forum. Thanks.

I have got an on-board graphics controller. It is either:

Intel 845 G/GL or

Intel 82865G

I cannot tell exactly which.

Please could you let me know the position concerning drivers for these when running under either Vista or 7. Would drivers be needed at all?
