(Just to point out that I was following an installation order obtained from Dell Support site for a previous installation, in 2010. Notably, it did not mention the Matrix Storage Manager.)
I have now completed an installation, this time WITHOUT installing the suspect MSM driver, and all is well.
Windows Update is still working.
Closer examination of the hard copy of the Dell Drivers recommendation for my PC (from 2010) shows this driver was NOT mentioned. Yet other 2010 notes definitely suggest it was needed. Unfortunately, I think some of the 2010 notes are missing, so I do not know why I thought it should be included in the installed drivers.
The PC seems to be happy enough without this driver installed, so I guess I just need to ignore it.
