I've heard of a couple people who have received that error message. I don't know what is causing it, but I wonder if it's not an isolated case. If you email me (dsrfix at goodells dot net) I'll give you a few ideas to try to troubleshoot this.
BTW, jmwills advice is always good. Do the online chat with Dell support and tell them PC Restore won't work so you need them to send you the reinstallation CDs. Even if you do manage to get PC Restore working, you'll want the CDs if/when your hard disk dies or you upgrade it.
Welcome to the club! I have tried many possible ways but I couldn't find a solution. However I found a link that solves this problem but for a ghost 2003 program, here u go
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/1999112214191125
I suggest u do a manual restore and then backup ur image, steps on how to do this is in Dan's site ^^^
I just do not inheriently trust these Restore Partitions. They are like backups. How do you know they are any good until you need them, unless you verify them.
I actually find it useful. First because it saves me alot of time than the actual format, second everything is already installed, plus I bought my laptop without junkware because its not from the U.S. the only software I had to uninstall is Microsoft Works, Symantec Internet Security, and Sonic RecordNow. There is no trial, or ad software (such as AOL), thank god.
Jim, I bought the Reinstallation disks and would have preferred to use them. I understand they do not come preloaded with all of the trialware! I was afraid that using them would have affected the MediaDirect and EISA partitions.
I would love to re-claim the PC Restore partition (combine it w/the Ghost b/u partition...or combine both with the active partition), install from the disks, then save the initial image to a DVD or USB drive...if it can be done without affecting the MediaDirect and EISA partitions. I understand the diagnostic tools on the EISA partition can be obtained elsewhere, so I'm not as concerned about that.
Dan, if the above is not do-able, I'll send you an email...I'll feel better if I can get a clean restore.
mbushnaq00, I'll also check Dan's site for instructions to make a backup image. I have a rather large USB drive that I bought just for backups. Creating a full "restore" image will be a first for me...and something I'd like to do for all three of my PCs.
FWIW, I haven't had any problems so far with the errant restore (knock on simulated wood grain formica desktop). The only "problem" is that I had to uninstall all of the pre-installed trialware...but that is proof of the restoration.
I had the same problem with my E1505/6400 I kept getting the error 36000. I tried everything... formating the C: drive, exporting the IMG folder and the .GHO files out of the Dell recovery Partition to a usb drive and see if i could recover it using ghost 8.3. I tried the DSRFIX----> http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm and kept getting the the !!fatal error when i did the DSRFIX from the boot cd. I tried the ptedit to manually restore the image but it still kept on giving me the error.
I finally tried " DSRFIX /PBR4 /F " and selected y for all the answers, did the ctrl + F11 after the BIOS screen, tried to restore again and it worked. Hope it works for you guys too. I think that's what fixed the problem although I did format the C: drive partition and the "MEDIADIRECT" partition before it so if it doesnt work for you guys try that first.
I obtained a new, improved image file for the computer. When running the Ghost program, there were no errors. So, the original image file must have been corrupted.

I found the solution!
Root cause: Bad image file
I obtained a new, improved image file for the computer. When running the Ghost program, there were no errors. So, the original image file must have been corrupted.
