Error Loading Operating System

When computer is turned on, I recieve the message:  Error Loading Operating System.  I thought the computer had Windows 98 on it but it has windows 95 - I tried to load windows xp....... 

I am told that I need to reformat the hard drive but don't know how to get past this message to even type A:....

Please help!!!  Many thanks.

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Please tell us what system you have as it depends on wht the system is as to what the steps are that will be needed to set the system to boot to the A: drive. In short though you need to go into the BIOS of the system and set the system to boot to the A: drive then you can use a standard boot disk to format the hard drive. If you are installing windows XP you need to set the system to boot to the CD rom and The disk will take it from there.

1.  If you have Win 95 your system may not be up to hardware specs for XP.

2. In addition I do not think you can upgrade the OS Win95 to XP.  Only a clean install with the full version program rather tan upgrade version if that is what you have.
