Error checking problems in XP
I am having trouble when I try to run error checking on the hard drive. It starts ok but gets to stage 2, a screen comes up for a couple of seconds and says something about a problem being detected and it is shutting down to prevent damage. It then restarts and the whole thing begins again. The only way I can get out of this mode is to press F8 at the Dell logo screen and choose Last Known Good Configuration. I have reinstalled XP more than once and the problem persists. Dell Technical Support insists that there is nothing wrong with the hard drive and that I need to reinstall XP again. Does anyone have any idea why this is happing and what can be done about it?

Did you do a Clean Install from boot of reinstallation XP CD or Install from within Windows.(New Installation)
I have shown the supersite link last as it assumes Clean Install status so doesn't include step to delete existing partition at step 5 & so achieve Clean Install status.
Use this link & select XP Home or PRO then method , ie: Used Hard Drive , Multi_Page has text & large pictures of Clean Install.
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/
Use this link for Clean Install of XP , if you click on Pictures they Expand for easy view
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html (Delete existing partition at step 10b for Clean Install)
or use this link ( *** Delete existing partition at step 5 for Clean Install ***)
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Clean Install deletes existing partition (like FDISK) & Formats HD during Install of Windows XP from XP CD.
Set BIOS to use CD-ROM as 1st boot device usually by pressing "F2" key during boot (startup),
for some Computers press "Del" key
Re-start Computer & when message "Press any key to boot from CD" shows do it & let subsequent messages "Press any key...." time out to Windows setup.

I did a clean install from the CD. In fact, after I posted the first question, I did another clean install on a brand new hard drive. A Dell technician walked me step by step through the process and still the problem persists. I installed a second hard drive after that with a new cable and the problem is the same on the first hard drive which has the OS on it, but the drive that I installed last had no problems with the error checking. Now I wonder if it is the OS. I have reinstalled it so many times I don't know what more I can do. The sites you listed were very informative for me. Thank you for the info. Any more ideas about what I can do to fix this situation?

I finally have the problem fixed. Dell sent a new XP CD and a new hard drive. A technician installed the hard drive and started the install of the OS. I ran error checking later that night and this time it stopped and went to a stop error message and stayed there so I was able to get a stop error number. I then went on the internet and searched for that message number. The problem seemed to be caused by Turtle Beach Santa Cruz driver. I went to Dell downloads and found the more current driver, downloaded it and installed it and the problem is solved. I hope this helps someone else.
