Error message-'You are running 2 programs'

Question

My BIL has a 1 yr old Dell laptop, running WinXP.For a few weeks now, when he first starts it up (before connecting to internet) he gets an error message that says 'You are running two programs, this will slow your computer down'. He just ignores it, and connects to the internet and goes on about his internet business. Any ideas what this means, and what fix we could use?? Thanks, Margie in Oregon

It sounds like the work of malware. Download Ad-aware from here, Spybot from here and Microsoft AntiSpyware from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.
