Error messages on login

Several weeks ago, we had a big storm, the power in the house flashed on and off a couple of time, and our Dell XPS came back up with the infamous blue screen.   I did the hard disk check and it found some problems.  I followed the directions to repair, including doing a "repair" from the operating system disk that came with the system.   Anyway, the system is back up and running - sort of.

When we login we get a series of error messages:

1)  sprtcmd.exe   GetRequestedRuntimeInfo could not be located in the dynamic link library mscoree.dll

2) .Net Framework Initiation   C:\windows\microsoft.net\frameworkv2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll could not be loaded.

each of the errors repeats.

We get these when I log in and when my wife logs in.

In addition, Windows installer is trying to install PhotoGallery.  Which we don't use, don't want and didn't even know we had.

Any suggestions?

Doing a repair install, you may have to download these drivers fron drivers and downloads and install them in this order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

Then go and Validate Windows, again.

go to Windows Update site and take the custom updates, also. Net Frameword is used with some programs and is most likely needed. If your updates download and fail to install, the try this...

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Attempt to run Windows Update

As for Photy Gallery, it usually comes with your HP camera, when you install it.

OK, I did all the steps that you suggested.   I could not find any drivers for many of the categories.

When I ran windows update, and selected the recommended, it downloaded and installed 78 or 70 updates.  If failed on the Security Update for Microsoft .Net Framework Version 1.0 Service Pack 3 (KB90494).  The error code was 0x8007f0f0.

Then I went to Custom section and tried to install Microsoft .Net Framework x86  (KB928416).  It failed with error code 0x643.

Eariler I had tried to install XP Service Pack 3.   It got half way through, stopped, said that it could not install, and undid everything that it had done.

Both that I installed Internet Explorer 7, and that seemed to work.

I still get the errors originally reported.   I appears to me (I know just enough to be dangerous), that the problem is with the .Net services.

I tried looking the 0x643 and x8007f0f0 error codes up under find solutions and could not find them.
