Every folder in the C:\ Drive is read only

Like the title says, everything in my C:\ drive is read only which obviously is a problem. If I goto a folder and untick read only, it asks if I want to apply it to the folder and the subfolder. I hit yes, then it says applying blah blah blah. About a minute later when its done I hit OK. Then I go back into the folder properties and its read only again...it will not stay unchecked. I am having problems with programs saying "you do not have privlages to modify this file" or things like that, but I am the computer administrator. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

All folders on every Windows system in the universe are Read Only.  You cannot write a folder.  You can store files in a folder, but you cannot write a folder.  This is normal. Your problem is not the read-only attribute.  Are these folders in another users directory structure?  Specifically which folders are they?

Sorry I worded that wrong. Every folder, and every file on my C:\ Drive is read only and if I un-check read only, it just reverts back to read only when I press OK. Everything in My Documents, Program Files, ect...anything on the C:\ drive is read only. And I only made one user account which is me, and I have full administration privileges on the account.

I think I'm having the same issue as you are DrKickflip13 so I'll explain my problem and maybe someone can help both of us :)

I am the Computer Administrator, and the author of the document but when I try to open it (in Word 2003 with SP2) I get the error message of user does not have access privileges. This happened after I saved the file and closed it. I tried to open it the next day and got that error. Now I can't even delete it or copy it or move it because it just keeps telling me user does not have access privileges. I now have 14 files that all do it, some are Word and some are Excel. I would rather not lose the files as I, stupidly I admit, haven't backed them up but if to fix it I have to restore the computer I will do so.

Hope that explains the issue, thanks to anyone that can offer any help.

Ohh, thanks it worked!
I would just like to point out that my main problem is that I was missing the most important part of those instructions!

Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.

TO log on in safe mode, restart your computer and hit F8 when you see the hit F2 for setup or F12 (or whatever the other one is, lol)...Read the screen very carefully, near the bottom it tells you to hit F8 again, hit F8, then you'll see that all too familiar reboot in safe mode and other options screen from Windows 98...

Talk about feeling REAL stupid! oh well....
