Sorry about the blank entry - I pressed the wrong key.
I have received the following error message when opening Internet Explorer on our Dimension 4100 using Windows ME.
"Explorer has caused an error in URLMON.DLL. Explorer will now close"
Can anyone suggest any reason? Please can you tell me what can I do to correct the problem?
I have seen an earlier message (author Denny Denham 29-12-2003 in this Forum) and tried to use "regsrv32 urlmon.dll2", but the computer did not recognise this DOS command.

The problem has become even stranger. I can actually use Internet Explorer and look at various webpages even though the URLMON.DLL error message remains on the screen, however, it obviously obscures part of each IE webpage. If I click on X or the Close box then IE is shut down and the computer reverts to the desktop.
Since I can also use Netscape as a browser to open the Microsoft update pages I have managed to update IE to a later non-beta version, 6.0.2800, but I still get the error message when I open IE.

Regsvr32.exe is located in C:\Windows\System. At the command prompt navigate to that directory and the regsvr32 urlmon.dll command should be recognized.

To Denny Denham: Thank you for your help, I followed your instructions and the regsvr32 program ran without any error message, however, I still get the same error message when I open IE. What can I do now?

The instruction "regsrv32 urlmon.dll" now functions correctly and I can open IE without the offending error message appearing, however, ithe instruction has to be used every time the computer is started. I shall now try some fo the other suggestions I have received.

I have now tried a repair to IE6 using the advice in Microsoft KB194177. I pasted the instruction for a repair to IE6 in the sequence Start/Run and then followed the prompts, this process seems to have cured the problem.

To any other Forum Users who have had trouble with URLMON.DLL, I have now been running the computer for several weeks without a recurrence of the problem.
