Explorer.exe file does not boot up

Hello.  I have a  Dell Dimension 8300 PC using XP Home edition.  Everything works fine but I have to navigate through the task manager to do everything.  Somewhere along the way I accidently removed the Explorer.exe from the task manager.  I actually thought it was a virus.  How do I make the desktop active again since all I have now is the photo of my daughter with no icons or task bar in sight and the Windows Task Manager box.  Any help here would be appriciated. You deleted the explorer.exe file?   if not, in task manager do a   File >New Task, then type in    explorer.exe   hit OK.  See if explorer loads now.
