Extended Capability Port

Question

I just installed a parallel port in my XP Home edition and want to configure it into the ECP mode.   I have read that the mode can be set by the BIOS. By entering SETUP, I cannot make any changes.Their is no reference to the port mode in SETUP. Also, I cannot set the mode with device Manager.

Since you installed the PCI card, you will have to set the mode, if it's an option, in the card, not the BIOS. You may be able to set the mode in the Windows Device Manager.

Have you tried using the ECP with your hardware? Some older Parallel port devices will work with it and for some really old devices that mode is too fast for it.

I've gotten back to my Extended Capability Port problem.   I cannot set the mode in the BIOS, on the card, or through the Device manager. None have that capability. The card works in annother application but I have no way of determining the mode.   It is possible to set the mode by setting bits 5-7 in the Extended Control Register ( basic address + 402h ). I have a problem determining the basic address. Addresses 3bch,278h, and 378h are reserved for LPT1,LPT2, AND LPT3. The Plug and Play in my Dell E510 has mapped the card into LPT3 at address B888. I do not know how to install the card into another address.
