simpswr,

In the event you are able to extract XP run Belarc Advisor on the system first and see if it extracts a Product ID for XP.

Have you looked at the CD to see what's on there, such as a "readme" file or some instruction file?   I've seen several Compaq "QuickRestore" CD's and they all have options for restoring the OS or individual applications or doing a complete reinstall of all software.

Hi,

As far as I know you cannot extract XP from these recovery disks. All you can do is use the disk then uninstall as much junk as you can.

There might be an option to partition while reinstalling, so keep a look out.  If there is only one partition you won`t be able to partition using Disk Management in XP, so if there is no option during the reinstall you would have to use a program like Partition Magic.

Take an OEM Windows XP disk and reinstall using the CDKey written on the COA sticker.

I suppose if all else fails, I can partition with a "real" XP disc abort the installation then restore from the image. . was hopeing not to have to do that.

Thanks . . wrs

Thanks . . I have a sticker on the bottom of the notebook with XP activation numbers . . think it might be different from what would be in the disc?

Thanks . . wrs

There are three cd's . . each has a file named Image1.gst . . looks like a ghost image huh?

One is much larger than the other three so I'd guess it has XP on it, . . may just run it to see what happens.

Thanks . . wrs

On Sony restore CD you have an option of changing the default settings. You can make it have more than one partition if you want it to. You get the options as you boot to the first CD. I don't know if other companies have the same feature or not.

That's what I did and it worked! . . I had thought the COA were tied to install discs but that turns out not to be true.  It worked like a charm.  Thanks!
